Ammon has dedicated his career to pursuing and promoting justice on behalf of the people of Coconino County.

During his 14 years at the Coconino County Attorney’s Office (CCAO), he has prosecuted cases involving murder, criminal street gangs, and sexual offenders.  He is a dedicated trial attorney, and has proven himself time and again as one of the top prosecuting attorneys in the state. In 2014, Ammon was recognized as the Arizona Felony Prosecutor of the Year by the Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys’ Advisory Council.  He consistently focuses his efforts on seeking justice for victims of the most violent and dangerous crimes, and has become a leader in the criminal justice community.

Ammon believes that prosecutors must be ethical and thoughtful in exercising their prosecutorial duties. This means understanding that justice does not always require incarceration. Sometimes the best way to protect the community is to offer alternative dispositions for offenders who would benefit from treatment or diversion. To this end, Ammon was actively involved in the development of the Page Recovery Court and the Flagstaff Mental Health Deferred Program. He actively works with community partners to expand collaborative courts, such as Mental Health Court, Recovery Court, and Veterans Court in Coconino County.

In 2022, Ammon led the effort to create the Pathways Diversion Program, an innovative pre-charging diversion that assists felony offenders booked into jail for simple drug possession.

In November 2021, he was appointed Chief Deputy County Attorney at the CCAO, and is responsible for managing an office of approximately 20 attorneys and 30 legal paraprofessionals.

Over the course of his career, Ammon has been asked to train and mentor other prosecutors. He has a passion for teaching and has lectured for the Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys’ Advisory Council, the Arizona Bar Association, the Flagstaff Teen Court, the National District Attorneys Association, Coconino Community College, and Northern Arizona University. He also regularly trains local police agencies regarding their constitutional requirements.

In 2016, Ammon was asked to serve as a Senior Deputy Attorney at the CCAO where he supervised other felony attorneys and prosecuted the most complex cases in the County.

Ammon and his wife, Jesica, are currently raising three girls and two dogs. Jesica owns and operates a dance studio in the Sunnyside neighborhood. Ammon enjoys spending time outdoors, working incrementally on his house, and watching his daughters dance.

“The Barker family motto is ‘pressure is a privilege.’ The pressure we feel in life or work means we have opportunities to make positive changes. We teach our kids to embrace these opportunities. I’m ready for this next opportunity as the Coconino County Attorney.”
